White Australia

Title

White Australia

Description

The following documents offer a brief glimpse into white Australia with a particular emphasis on popular culture and the attitudes of the general public towards non-white immigration. Note the use of propaganda and the glorification of ‘white Australia’, particularly in the cartoon and sheet music. There is also a poster released by the Commonwealth during the First World War warning against enemy subjects and a badge endorsing white Australia as well as the People’s Liberal Party. Note as well the postcard that is anti-White Australia, demonstrating that while public attitudes may have been vocally anti-non-white immigration, opinions were far from homogenous.

These documents are for background knowledge only; explore the other links of the left to gain further insight into more specific areas of Syrian life under the White Australia Policy.
